Today I am off to a decent start with my reading adventures thus far. I got Secret Wars #7, Illuminati #1, and All-New All-Different Avengers #1 read thus far. I’ll read more late tonight as I’ll use it for my pre-sleep time chill out session but yeah I’m off to a decent start. I’m taking the advice I gave a friend of mine and just relax and write for a bit. There’s a good reason why this is called the Chill Bloggity Thing, it is for me to write and just relax. That’s why this is named what it is. My brain is having trouble wanting to write anything so I use this as a way to loosen up the old mind and get it functioning. Sometimes I’m on fire and I can write away with no problem but other days nothing comes to me so pretty much it is Chill Bloggity Thing time. I really should just make these a daily to twice daily thing just so keep everything flowing on the blog and keep myself writing throughout the day.
Anyway, comic wise on TV right now I am really excited for a lot of things. The Flash has been rocking and rolling on all cylinders as Zoom is possibly one of the most terrifying villains in a long time. The design is still seared into my mind and what he has unleashed so far makes me wonder what will happen next on the show and Grodd is next week! Gorilla Grodd so far looks better than his first appearance and from what we got from King Shark, man I can’t wait to see what we get out of Grodd next week. Now as for Arrow, that show is still solid but not as solid as The Flash has been this season. Though I did love Constantine’s appearance as Matt Ryan is amazing and I miss the Constantine TV series so much. Sadly no other cable network so possibly afford it outside of maybe AMC and FX. We’ll see but I don’t think we’re done with Constantine quite yet. I may have more to write on this in the future now that I think on it. See this is why I love the Chill Bloggity Thing, I get ideas just from writing stuff out here, cool huh?
I should start doing a weekly TV chat blog here just to set up conversations and so forth. No real recapping, I’ve done my share of recaps for both Arrow and Agents of SHIELD in my day and I could be persuaded to revive those, we’ll see. Heck if I could figure out a way to be as prolific as Emergency Awesome with all he covers TV wise I’d be set, seriously that youtube channel blows my mind. Solid recaps and he gets them done pretty quickly, the only reason why some shows are delayed is because there is so much going on and that’s a good thing. It is inspiring really and just another one of those things that inspires me to push myself that much more. So much good TV right now, dang that is unreal. I love this age of TV so much.
Now as for comics, there is so much going on too. That’s so unreal as to how much great stuff is coming out in the near future. So many cool projects on the way, Marvel has a lot of great stuff and next week from DC I am looking forward to reading the Batman: Europa book. Then we’ll have the Dark Knight book on the way too. Yes I am going to read at least the first issue of Dark Knight as hey I can’t help but be curious. I actually got Superman: American Alien today and I’m curious about that one, that one I will definitely end up writing something on as I haven’t bought a Superman comic in forever. This is going to be interesting, I’m hopeful I’ll end up digging it. Yep that’ll be part of my late night reading tonight. Most definitely part of my late night reading tonight.
Now I am getting pretty relaxed and getting back into my groove a little more even as I write here, ah the fun of the Chill Bloggity Thing. Tomorrow shall be fun and I need to prep for the Comics and Coffee feed for Friday. I’ll be doing that a good bit as last Friday I was hanging with family awhile so that kept me away from the computer a lot. At least this Friday I’ll be home a little more so that should work out pretty well. Now I shall head off for the night. Time for this guy to get himself some sleep and relax and read for a bit. Catch you all later, bye for now and take care everybody!
Today was comic book catch up day wonderland! Late last night was Midnighter catch up and today was Constantine: The Hellblazer catch up. Now what did I think of both series? My dear lord I loved both of them so much for different reasons. Midnighter is a series that captures why Midnighter is such a great character. Even setting up the most hilarious friendship with Grayson. Then you have Constantine: The Hellblazer which makes me wish that the TV series had more of what this comic has. It’s the best mesh of DC Constantine and Vertigo Constantine all in one. That’s a good way to put it and it works well. If you’re not reading Midnighter or Constantine right now, holy crap change that now. Change it, you’ll be a better person for it at the end of the day. Two awesome books that are well worth your time.
I also read One Punch Man vol. 1 today which I’ll have more to say later once I read vol. 2. I think that’ll be expanded into a bigger piece as I have much to say on the glory and wonder that is One Punch Man. I’ve been reading more into the DC One Million Omnibus which I do say is a lot of fun reading in one massive chunk. It’s pretty addicting reading and holds up pretty well. I do adore the Batman design of the Justice Legion A more and more as I read the story. It was cool to see Bryan Hitch be the artist on the Green Lantern 1,000,000 book too. It’s neat to take a look back at these stories. I never read all of the DC One Million stuff back then so I’m discovering a major chunk of a story in the process too. The Young Justice 1,000,000 story though holds up insanely well and if any of you are at all curious about it, read the stories. If you’re a big Superboy, Impulse, and Tim Drake Robin fan, you will adore the Young Justice 1,000,000 story.
After I finished a Midsomer Murders I saw that the Arrow Season 4 trailer was posted, I’m pretty hopeful for the season to come. It was cool to see that little snippet of Constantine in there. Season 3 of Arrow was a mess. It was all over the place tonally but enjoyable for the most part. Season 4 looks promising from the trailer though Diggle’s new outfit is a mixed bag, insert obvious Magneto joke here. Oh and here’s the trailer below and see what you think for yourselves.
With that I shall end my Chill Bloggity Thing for the night. I’ve been mostly working on side projects today and that’s been about it outside of general reading. Onwards to Saturday!
Flash Fact: Following The Arrow Season Three finale, now the hype machine begins for The Flash Series premiere. The first trailer was shown last night during Arrow making it clear that the series is going to be a big part of Arrow’s universe. Just a sweet way to show that while Arrow and The Flash are two unique series, the connection will still be there and prominent. Even better showing the personalities of the two characters and how different but similar they are in their own way. Check out the fun trailer first, that I am going to show below. It’s a cool trailer that can give you a great idea as to how Barry Allen’s Flash is being trained.
The hashtag of Don’t Blink is perfect for this show, even the logo for The Flash screams fun for this show. The longer trailer shown today gives us more of an idea of the tone The Flash will have. You can see the full interconnected nature of The Flash and Arrow highlighted further and get an idea as to how the series will play out in the months to come. I love that they’re putting Weather Wizard in this as the first major Rogue, I am surprised they’re not using Captain Cold but that’s for the full Rogues later on. This is the trailer that made me excited for The Flash and made me realize that The Flash and Arrow are going to compliment in each other in a brilliant way. Check out the full trailer below and see what you think.
I’d love how Grant Gustin handled Barry Allen in the Arrow episodes he was in and he plays The Flash with that same energy. The suit in motion looks a lot better than what the still shots gave me. Now I am full speed ahead in being jazzed for The Flash. The CW putting this on at 8 pm on Tuesday bugs me a bit as I would love to have had the Arrow and The Flash power lineup. To speculate here, maybe the CW is going with splitting up the shows over two nights for crossovers and having more live eyes on the network. DVR views are huge but the live audience is huge and keeping viewers engaged for two nights of live programming would be huge. Of course the other speculation is not having two superhero shows in one night that could just be too much of a good thing to have right now. Either way, The CW is going to be a happy network this year I think.
Between Constantine, Agents of SHIELD, Arrow, Gotham, and now The Flash hitting the airwaves this fall, this is an exciting time. Prepare your DVR’s, your snacks, and whatever other preparations you need to make, we are in for one amazing fall season. The Flash is just one part of a sequentially beautiful year in comic book television.
(As per the Agents of SHIELD column, spoilers upon more spoilers shall be in this column. Please be advised that I hold little back when I discuss something that involves a spoiler. Your mileage may vary on spoilers but I just want to get this out of the way now. Warning is given and onwards with the writing at hand.)
If you may or may not known I did a column for Comics Crux and for a short time at Rhymes With Geek called Arrow Analysis. I ended up putting the column on hiatus to focus on other matters. Now likely next season for Arrow I’ll revive Arrow Analysis because the Season Two finale set the stage for big possibilities. If you deal with Agents of SHIELD, the uptick for that show happened just before and after Captain America: Winter Soldier. Season Two of Arrow was on a high from the beginning outside of stumbling a bit at the midpoint, mostly in Laurel Lance’s character development. Outside of any stumbling points in Season Two, Season Three of Arrow looks like it could be mindblowing.
By the way get your spoiler goggles on now, because this is where I pull no punches and start revealing extra stuff left and right. Spoilers are now officially on because if one warning isn’t good enough, two should be sufficient to get my point across.
Now that you’re still here now we can begin, Arrow’s Season Finale gave us multiple changes to characters and new situations to play with. Thea Queen now moving on to be with her Dad, Malcolm Meryln which will be the set up for more appearances from Malcolm in the future. I’m looking forward to Thea’s evolution as a character, I hope that the series spends time with her as she gets to know her Dad. The train station scene of Thea and Malcolm shows that she has a lot more in her than even she realized. I don’t think this will end up being the generic someone becomes evil, I’m thinking along the lines of Thea becoming a stronger version of herself thanks to someone who’s accepted who he is. That’s my own theory on this one as Thea Queen’s evolution has only just begun.
At this point I am begging The CW at some point to do a Suicide Squad spinoff because Amanda’s team needs more screen time. Deadshot popping up in that last bit near the end made me so happy. The next step towards a stronger presence for Deadshot next season, especially with Diggle about to be a Dad with Lyla’s baby on the way. That ties A.R.G.U.S. into Arrow’s universe even more. Now that the flashbacks are going to be centered around Ollie’s time with Amanda Waller in Hong Kong, we’re going to be getting tons of A.R.G.U.S time next season. I’m happy that we’re not going to see a different setting for the flashbacks next season. I was so burnt on The Island flashbacks it was unreal so a new surrounding for them is a breath of fresh air.
Of course The Island is still a factor, Deathstroke is now there in the beginning of the A.R.G.U.S. supermax it seems. That is a slick idea especially when you realize Waller and Oliver Queen already have a relationship of sorts, it makes all the more sense how The Island became known to her in the first place. That’s actually the clever part of this season finale, the threats are all around but in a new way and the possibilities of new allies in the process. You even have the Black Canary set up with Laurel Lance though we’re not going to see that for a long time, Sara only gave her the jacket and Laurel has training to do. I was shocked though at Quentin Lance’s collapse, I’m shocked at what went down there.
Now as for speculation for next season, Roy is now Arsenal/Red Arrow depending on what name they use. That’s about all you can dive into there as really now that Thea is out of the picture, Roy is going to be focused on that. Felicity probably got to be part of one of the best teases in Arrow history with that relationship fake out on Deathstroke. The confusion and cheering that was happening at that moment was wonderful that turned out to be a larger scheme. Of course now the next focus is Diggle and Felicity with friends likely enough to help Ollie get back his company. That is going to be fun to watch, Oliver’s Arrow life is stronger than ever just he now has to get his secret identity life back in order.
I’m hoping that they don’t do the year jump like they did last time, it would be fun to see Arrow spending the season rebuilding itself. I wouldn’t be shocked if Season Three did another jump in Arrow to set things in motion. I’m going to repeat myself though on this, don’t do the time skip again as that gimmick can only be used once or twice in the history of a series. I want to see Arrow built back up before my very eyes, I want to see all of third season happen in a way that blows my mind. Arrow Season Two blew Season One away, maybe Season Three will be the time I revive Arrow Analysis once more. Until then, here’s to Season Three of Arrow being even better than the second.
I never thought I’d be in an age where this many comic books would be hitting television screens at the same time. To start this off we have Agents of SHIELD renewed and Agent Carter on the way, Now DC’s lineup for television is insanity in a good way, Constantine on NBC, Gotham on Fox, The Flash and iZombie on the CW, with Arrow renewed for another season too. Don’t forget The Walking Dead on AMC returning in the fall, which means eight comic book shows are going to be on TV at the same time. This is huge to say the least because right now this proves that comics on TV are big business, especially with that Preacher adaptation on the way from AMC. Which means if these shows all survive by that point, we’ll have nine comic book shows on TV. If I’m missing anything else please let me know, I’m just astonished as to how many comics are appearing on the screens and how many are going to be on TV at the same time.
Now I’m still unsure as to the survival of the new shows on the scene. Agent Carter has potential to be huge as my own shock of my Mom getting excited about the series. She heard about the premise of Agent Carter and she got intrigued, I can’t wait to see who else will be in this cast. The Flash should be an easy sell as it ties into Arrow with Grant Gustin’s take on Barry Allen going over well with everyone. iZombie could be a touchy sell as it exists in its own little world but it has a strong creative pedigree behind it. Constantine on NBC is one I’m unsure about though if paired with Grimm NBC could have something there. Gotham will be the next easiest one to get a second season next to The Flash because Fox paid huge money for that show. Gotham also has the bonus of having a strong cast to build the series. Gotham’s push of showing what puts Jim Gordon and Young Bruce Wayne into their respective roles while building Batman’s rogues gallery in the process should be a winner. Even more amazing is how I managed to shove in that many perspectives into one paragraph, that’s impressive.
Right now I really don’t have too much to say on a lot of the new shows, I’m in awe of the fact that we’re going to have that many comic shows on in the first place. I do consider this huge despite my cynicism on a few things, this is a big deal for me to see. Either of these shows could hit big, could get renewed, and have potential to last a few years. As I start to see trailers for more of this I’ll have more to say in the months to come but for right now, I remain hopeful. Please let these all be as solid as what I hope they could be, I want a vibrant future for comics on my TV screen as much as anyone else.
